CHAMPERICO, Retalhuleu Department — A 5.0 magnitude quake rattled close to Champerico on Thursday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The USGS reported a tremor in the region at 13:14 UTC (07:14 local time). The epicenter was about 60 km southwest of Champerico, at a depth of 35 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 4.9 event, but later upgraded it to 5.0.

During the past week, the area has experienced 16 tremors of magnitude 2.5 or above. The strongest, a 5.3 magnitude quake, was detected close to Brisas Barra de Suchiate on Jul. 18.
