CHAMPERICO, Retalhuleu Department — A 5.0 magnitude quake rattled close to Champerico on Thursday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The USGS reported a tremor in the region at 13:14 UTC (07:14 local time). The epicenter was about 57 km southwest of Champerico, at a depth of 35 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 4.9 event, but later upgraded it to 5.0.

Tremors last week

During the past week, the area has experienced 26 tremors of magnitude 2.5 or above, two of them larger than magnitude 5.5. The strongest, a 5.8 magnitude quake, was detected close to Puerto Madero on Jul. 18.
