SOUTHLAND DISTRICT, Southland Region — A 5.9 magnitude quake jolted close to Te Anau on Thursday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

A tremor shook the area at 09:14 UTC (21:14 local time). The earthquake’s epicenter was about 42 km north-northwest of Te Anau and occurred at a depth of 76 km.
