July 17: Earthquake measuring 5.0 rattles region near Puerto Madero, Mexico

TAPACHULA, Chis. — A 5.0 magnitude quake occurred near Puerto Madero at midday on Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The USGS reported a tremor in the area at 17:23 UTC (11:23 local time). The epicenter was roughly 59 km south-southwest of Puerto Madero, at a depth of 35 km.

Quakes past week

Over the last week, 11 tremors of magnitude 2.5 or above have been recorded in the area, two of them larger than magnitude 5.5. The largest, measuring 7.3, occurred in the same region prior to this quake.
