Seismic activity on July 17: Earthquake near Puerto Madero, Mexico recorded – magnitude 5.1

TAPACHULA, Chis. — A 5.1 magnitude quake occurred near Puerto Madero around midday Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The tremor struck the area at 17:15 UTC (11:15 local time). It occurred at a depth of 10 km with the epicenter approximately 72 km southwest of Puerto Madero.

Tremors last week

Last week, there have been nine quakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater centered nearby, two of them larger than magnitude 5.5. The largest, measuring 7.3, occurred in the same region prior to this quake.
