Update: Sept. 18 – 5.3 magnitude earthquake detected close to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.3 magnitude quake struck near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Thursday morning.

It was reported that a tremor hit the region at 20:52 UTC (07:52 local time). The epicenter was situated roughly 164 km east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, at a depth of 10 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.2 event, but later upgraded it to 5.3.

Over the last week, the area has experienced eight tremors with a magnitude 5.5 or greater. The largest one was a 7.8 earthquake that was reported in the same region prior to this quake.
