Update: 5.1 magnitude earthquake recorded close to Ozernovskiy, Russia on July 30

Wednesday night, a 5.1 magnitude quake was detected close to Ozernovskiy, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

At 11:38 UTC (22:38 local time), the region was shaken by a tremor. The earthquake struck at a depth of 59 km, with its epicenter approximately 118 km east-southeast of Ozernovskiy. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.2 event, but later downgraded it to 5.1.

During the past week, 16 tremors of magnitude 2.5 or greater have been reported in the area, four of them larger than magnitude 5.5. The largest, measuring 5.9, hit near Severo-Kuril’sk prior to this quake.
