Earthquake strikes area near Puerto Madero, Mexico: 5.3 magnitude detected on July 19

TAPACHULA, Chis. — A 5.3 magnitude quake shook near Puerto Madero on Sunday evening, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The tremor jolted the region at 02:18 UTC (20:18 local time). It occurred at a depth of 20 km with the epicenter roughly 59 km southwest of Puerto Madero.

Quakes last week

Last week, there have been 45 earthquakes with a magnitude 2.5 or greater centered nearby, three of them larger than magnitude 5.5. The biggest, a 7.3 magnitude tremor, was recorded in the same region on Jul. 17.
