Earthquake strikes area close to Puerto Madero, Mexico: 5.0 magnitude registered on July 17

TAPACHULA, Chis. — A 5.0 magnitude quake occurred near Puerto Madero on Friday afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

At 22:13 UTC (16:13 local time), a tremor hit the region at a depth of 35 km, with its epicenter roughly 79 km southwest of Puerto Madero.

Tremors last week

Last week, 19 tremors with a magnitude 2.5 or higher have been detected in the area, two of them larger than magnitude 5.5. The largest one was a 7.3 earthquake that shook the same region prior to this quake.
