MARE, Loyalty Islands Province — A 5.3 magnitude quake struck close to Tadine on Tuesday afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The tremor shook at 03:23 UTC (14:23 local time), with its epicenter approximately 76 km northeast of Tadine and a depth of 10 km.

Tremors last week

31 tremors of magnitude 2.5 or greater have been registered in the region during the past week, two of them larger than magnitude 5.5. The most significant was a 6.6 magnitude earthquake detected in the same area on Sep. 26.
