Update: Earthquake measuring 5.0 shakes area near Mendi, Papua New Guinea on Jan. 3

KAGUA DISTRICT, Southern Highlands Province — According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.0 magnitude quake jolted close to Mendi at midday on Saturday.

It was reported that a tremor struck the region at 01:26 UTC (11:26 local time). The epicenter was located approximately 31 km south of Mendi, at a depth of 10 km.
