HAWAII COUNTY, HI — A preliminary 5.2 magnitude quake struck near Kahaluu-Keauhou on Wednesday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
At 3:58 a.m. (5:58 p.m. local time), a tremor shook the region at a depth of 21 miles, with its epicenter roughly 3 miles west of Kahaluu-Keauhou. Seismologists first reported it as a 4.3 event, but later upgraded it to 5.2.

The agency has so far received 71 reports via its online form from people who indicate they experienced light shaking. Residents in several cities — including Hawi, Kapaau and Kamuela — reported feeling the quake, according to the USGS DYFI report.

Matching magnitude tremors reported this week
Two earthquakes, above magnitude 2.5, each with a magnitude of 2.1, have been reported in the area over the past week. The first occurred close to Honaunau-Napoopoo on May 29, and the second was detected near Pāhala on May 30.
