KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH, AK — According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.1 magnitude quake occurred close to Akhiok Sunday morning.

At 8:47 p.m. (10:47 a.m. local time), the region was shaken by a tremor. The earthquake jolted at a depth of 15 miles, with its epicenter roughly 70 miles south-southeast of Akhiok. Seismologists first reported it as a 4.2 event, but later upgraded it to 5.1.

Two tremors nearby past week

Two earthquakes above magnitude 2.5 were reported in the area last week. Each was centered in the same area with the more significant — a 4.0 magnitude event — occurring prior to this quake. The second, a 3.0 magnitude quake, struck on February 8.
