Update: Earthquake shakes region near Shikotan, Russia on Dec. 21 – 5.2 magnitude reported

At midday on Sunday, a 5.2 magnitude quake was recorded close to Shikotan, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor hit the area at 03:47 UTC (13:47 local time). It occurred at a depth of 10 km with the epicenter situated about 114 km east-southeast of Shikotan.

Tremors last week

Over the last week, 10 quakes of magnitude 2.5 or above have been detected in the area. The biggest, a 5.2 magnitude earthquake, was registered in the same region four days ago.
