Update: Seismic activity on Dec. 21 – 5.0 magnitude earthquake near Shikotan, Russia detected

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.0 magnitude quake jolted near Shikotan Sunday morning.

The tremor, which struck the area at 00:22 UTC (10:22 local time), was centered approximately 88 km east-southeast of Shikotan. It occurred at a depth of 56 km.

Six tremors with a magnitude 2.5 or higher were recorded in the region last week. The biggest, a 5.2 magnitude quake, hit the same region four days earlier.
