Update: Earthquake of 5.0 magnitude recorded close to Shikotan, Russia on Dec. 21

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.0 magnitude quake occurred near Shikotan on Sunday around midday.

At 03:52 UTC (13:52 local time), the region was rattled by a tremor. The earthquake jolted at a depth of 35 km, with its epicenter about 103 km east-southeast of Shikotan.
