Update: May 22 – 5.9 magnitude earthquake recorded near Bitung, Indonesia

A 5.9 magnitude quake struck close to Bitung on Friday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The tremor jolted the area at 01:05 UTC (10:05 local time). It occurred at a depth of 35 km with the epicenter approximately 108 km east-southeast of Bitung. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.8 event, but later upgraded it to 5.9.
