Update: Earthquake measuring 5.1 strikes area close to Calama, Chile on March 1

EL LOA, Antofagasta — According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.1 magnitude quake occurred near Calama Sunday afternoon.

A tremor hit the region at 20:03 UTC (17:03 local time). The earthquake’s epicenter was located about 43 km north-northeast of Calama and occurred at a depth of 107 km.

Tremors past week

Over the last week, there have been three quakes of magnitude 2.5 or above centered nearby. The strongest, a 4.9 magnitude quake, rattled near Ollagüe three days earlier.
