Update: Earthquake of 5.0 magnitude registered near the Kuril Islands on Aug. 5

A 5.0 magnitude quake was detected close to the Kuril Islands Tuesday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor, which shook the area at 10:15 UTC (21:15 local time), was centered east of the Kuril Islands. It occurred at a depth of 10 km.

Tremors last week

During the past week, the region has experienced six tremors of magnitude 2.5 or greater. The largest, measuring 5.1, jolted close to Severo-Kuril’sk two days ago.
