Update: Earthquake jolts region near Nikolski, AK on Sept. 3 – 5.3 magnitude registered

ALEUTIANS WEST CENSUS AREA, AK — A 5.3 magnitude quake occurred close to Nikolski on Thursday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor, which struck the area at 12:39 p.m. (1:39 a.m. local time), was centered roughly 52 miles south-southwest of Nikolski. It occurred at a depth of 28 miles.

Over the last week, 59 tremors of magnitude 2.5 or above have been detected in the area. The biggest, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake, was reported in the same region prior to this quake.
