Update: Earthquake of 5.0 magnitude registered close to Severo-Kuril’sk, Russia on Aug. 3

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.0 magnitude quake occurred near Severo-Kuril’sk on Sunday around midday.

It was reported that a tremor shook the region at 00:10 UTC (11:10 local time). The epicenter was located approximately 169 km east-southeast of Severo-Kuril’sk, at a depth of 25 km.

Tremors past week

Over the last week, seven quakes with a magnitude 5.5 or higher have been detected in the area. The most significant was a 6.1 magnitude earthquake recorded in the same region one day ago.
