Update: Earthquake measuring 5.3 hits area near Tsunō, Japan on Aug. 1

KOYU DISTRICT, Miyazaki — A 5.3 magnitude quake shook near Tsunō on Saturday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The tremor jolted the region at 19:10 UTC (04:10 local time). It occurred at a depth of 35 km with the epicenter approximately 44 km southeast of Tsunō. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.2 event, but later upgraded it to 5.3.
