5.0 magnitude earthquake rattles close to Palu, Indonesia on June 16

PARIGI MOUTONG REGENCY, Central Sulawesi — A 5.0 magnitude quake occurred near Palu on Tuesday afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The tremor hit at 08:04 UTC (16:04 local time), with its epicenter approximately 49 km east-southeast of Palu and a depth of 49 km.

Tremors last week

In the past week, there have been four quakes of magnitude 2.5 or above centered nearby. The strongest, a 6.7 magnitude quake, shook in the same region prior to this quake.
