Update: May 17 – 5.0 magnitude earthquake recorded close to Lorengau, Papua New Guinea

A 5.0 magnitude quake occurred near Lorengau on Sunday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The USGS reported a tremor in the region at 07:51 UTC (17:51 local time). The epicenter was about 112 km south-southeast of Lorengau, at a depth of 10 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.1 event, but later downgraded it to 5.0.

Closeby area shaken by two tremors over the week

In the past week, there have been two tremors exceeding magnitude 2.5 centered in the same area. The largest, a 5.4 magnitude earthquake, jolted on May 15, while the other, measuring 4.6, occurred on May 13.
