THAMES-COROMANDEL DISTRICT, Waikato Region — A 5.8 magnitude quake occurred near Pauanui on Tuesday evening, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor struck the area at 08:00 UTC (20:00 local time). It occurred at a depth of 10 km with the epicenter roughly 126 km east-northeast of Pauanui.
