Update: Earthquake measuring 5.1 jolts area close to Miyako, Japan on April 20

A 5.1 magnitude quake hit near Miyako on Monday evening, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The tremor struck the region at 09:49 UTC (19:49 local time). It occurred at a depth of 35 km with the epicenter about 127 km east-northeast of Miyako.

Closeby area shaken by two tremors over the week

Two earthquakes greater than magnitude 5.5 were registered in the region in the past week. Each was centered in the same area with the more significant — a 7.4 magnitude event — occurring prior to this quake. The second, a 5.6 magnitude tremor, hit on Apr. 20.
