Update: Earthquake of 5.3 magnitude registered close to Gataivai, Samoa on Jan. 20

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.3 magnitude quake hit near Gataivai Tuesday afternoon.

The tremor, which struck the area at 05:38 UTC (17:38 local time), was centered approximately 128 km south-southwest of Gataivai. It occurred at a depth of 10 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.1 event, but later upgraded it to 5.3.
