Update: 5.2 magnitude earthquake strikes near Macquarie Island on Dec. 31

A 5.2 magnitude quake was detected close to Macquarie Island Wednesday afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

It was reported that a tremor shook the region at 04:00 UTC (14:00 local time). The epicenter was situated west of Macquarie Island, at a depth of 10 km.
