Update: Earthquake measuring 5.2 hits area near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia on Sept. 15

YELIZOVSKY DISTRICT, Kamchatka Krai — the U.S. Geological Survey reported that a 5.2 magnitude quake jolted near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky around midday Monday.

The tremor shook the region at 01:39 UTC (13:39 local time). It occurred at a depth of 63 km with the epicenter situated approximately 82 km east-northeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.1 event, but later upgraded it to 5.2.

Tremors last week

In the past week, 11 tremors of magnitude 2.5 or greater have been recorded in the area, three of them larger than magnitude 7. The largest one was a 7.7 earthquake that was registered in the same region two days ago.
