YAEYAMA DISTRICT, Okinawa — A 5.5 magnitude quake was detected near Yonakuni Thursday afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
A tremor jolted the area at 07:45 UTC (16:45 local time). The earthquake’s epicenter was situated roughly 16 km north-northwest of Yonakuni and occurred at a depth of 114 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.9 event, but later downgraded it to 5.5.
