Update: Earthquake hits region close to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia on Aug. 7 – 5.2 magnitude recorded

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.2 magnitude quake struck close to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Thursday afternoon.

The tremor jolted at 05:26 UTC (16:26 local time), with its epicenter situated roughly 220 km southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and a depth of 10 km.

In the past week, the area has experienced 54 tremors of magnitude 2.5 or greater, two of them larger than magnitude 5.5. The most significant was a 5.7 magnitude earthquake detected in the same region seven days earlier.
