Update: 5.9 magnitude earthquake detected close to Severo-Kuril’sk, Russia on July 30

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.9 magnitude quake occurred near Severo-Kuril’sk Wednesday morning.

The tremor, which hit the area at 14:47 UTC (01:47 local time), was centered about 135 km east-southeast of Severo-Kuril’sk. It occurred at a depth of 23 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 6.4 event, but later downgraded it to 5.9.
