Update: Earthquake measuring 5.6 shakes area near Severo-Kuril’sk, Russia on July 30

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.6 magnitude quake jolted near Severo-Kuril’sk Wednesday afternoon.

A tremor struck the region at 05:05 UTC (16:05 local time). The earthquake’s epicenter was located roughly 123 km east of Severo-Kuril’sk and occurred at a depth of 35 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.7 event, but later downgraded it to 5.6.
