Update: May 23 – 5.3 magnitude earthquake detected southeast of Easter Island

EASTER ISLAND, Valparaíso — A 5.3 magnitude quake jolted southeast of Easter Island on Saturday around midday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

At 19:19 UTC (12:19 local time), a tremor struck the region at a depth of 10 km, with its epicenter southeast of Easter Island of southeast of Easter Island. Seismologists first reported it as a 4.8 event, but later upgraded it to 5.3.
