Update: July 30 – 5.0 magnitude earthquake recorded near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a 5.0 magnitude quake occurred near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Wednesday morning.

The tremor hit at 20:24 UTC (07:24 local time), with its epicenter situated about 215 km east-southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and a depth of 10 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 4.9 event, but later upgraded it to 5.0.

32 tremors of magnitude 2.5 or higher were registered in the region last week, three of them larger than magnitude 5.5. The largest, measuring 5.7, jolted the same area prior to this quake.
