The tremor, which shook the area at 12:38 UTC (00:38 local time), was centered roughly 72 km east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. It occurred at a depth of 67 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.3 event, but later upgraded it to 5.8.
