The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a 5.0 magnitude quake occurred near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Monday night.

At 11:33 UTC (22:33 local time), the region was hit by a tremor. The earthquake rattled at a depth of 10 km, with its epicenter approximately 140 km southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Seismologists first reported it as a 4.9 event, but later upgraded it to 5.0.

Tremors last week

Over the last week, there have been seven quakes with a magnitude 2.5 or greater centered nearby, two of them larger than magnitude 5.5. The most significant was a 6.1 magnitude earthquake registered in the same area prior to this quake.
