Update: Earthquake hits region near El Hoyo, Argentina on July 9 – 5.1 magnitude detected

FIGUEROA DEPARTMENT, Santiago del Estero Province—According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.1 magnitude quake struck near El Hoyo Wednesday afternoon.

At 19:11 UTC (16:11 local time), the area was jolted by a tremor. The earthquake shook at a depth of 575 km, with its epicenter approximately 17 km south-southwest of El Hoyo.

Last week’s tremor

During the past week, there was another earthquake of magnitude 2.5 centered in the region, which was registered near El Hoyo too, six days earlier.
