The National Weather Service released an updated dust storm warning at 4:59 p.m. on Wednesday in effect until 7 p.m. for El Paso County.

“At 4:57 p.m., an area of blowing dust was over West El Paso,” states the NWS. “Dangerous life-threatening travel.”

Locations impacted by the warning include West El Paso, East El Paso, Central El Paso, Northeast El Paso, Far East El Paso, Mission Valley, Chaparral, Horizon City, Santa Teresa, Vado, Orogrande, Las Cruces, Anthony, Hueco Tanks, White Sands Missile Range Headquarters, Sunland Park, Afton, Anthony Gap, NMSU Main Campus and Canutillo. This includes the following highways: Interstate 10 in New Mexico between mile markers 110 and 164. Interstate 10 in Texas between mile markers 1 and 32. Interstate 25 in New Mexico between mile markers 1 and 9. Highway 70 in New Mexico between mile markers 150 and 156. Highway 54 in New Mexico between mile markers 1 and 32.

According to the NWS, “Dust storms lead to dangerous driving conditions with visibility reduced to near zero. If driving, avoid dust storms if possible. If caught in one, pull off the road, turn off your lights and keep your foot off the brake.”
