JURM, Badakhshan — A 5.2 magnitude quake occurred near Jurm around midnight Tuesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

A tremor jolted the area at 19:51 UTC (00:21 local time). The earthquake’s epicenter was about 52 km south-southwest of Jurm and occurred at a depth of 215 km. The magnitude was originally reported as 5.3 but later downgraded to 5.2.

Nearby region rattled by two tremors over the week

Two earthquakes greater than magnitude 2.5 were registered in the area in the past week. Each was centered in the same region with the more significant — a 4.2 magnitude event — occurring on Aug. 14. The second, a 4.1 magnitude quake, hit on Aug. 12.
