Update: 5.2 magnitude earthquake recorded close to Sand Point, AK on July 17

ALEUTIANS EAST BOROUGH, AK — Thursday afternoon, a 5.2 magnitude quake was reported near Sand Point, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor, which hit the area at 2:09 a.m. (3:09 p.m. local time), was centered about 51 miles south-southeast of Sand Point. It occurred at a depth of 24 miles. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.3 event, but later downgraded it to 5.2.
