The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a 5.0 magnitude quake struck close to Miyako Sunday afternoon.

The tremor, which shook the area at 07:58 UTC (17:58 local time), was centered roughly 145 km east of Miyako. It occurred at a depth of 10 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 4.9 event, but later upgraded it to 5.0.
