Sept. 26: Earthquake measuring 5.3 shakes region near Tadine, New Caledonia

MARE, Loyalty Islands Province — A 5.3 magnitude quake occurred close to Tadine on Saturday night, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

A tremor hit the area at 12:14 UTC (23:14 local time). The earthquake’s epicenter was roughly 78 km east-northeast of Tadine and occurred at a depth of 10 km.

Tremors past week

Over the last week, there have been 15 earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater centered nearby, two of them larger than magnitude 5.5. The strongest, a 6.6 magnitude quake, slammed the same region on Sep. 26.
