Seismic activity on Oct. 11: Earthquake near Lorengau, Papua New Guinea recorded – magnitude 5.0

A 5.0 magnitude quake was reported close to Lorengau Saturday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor hit the area at 08:35 UTC (18:35 local time). It occurred at a depth of 10 km with the epicenter located about 181 km southeast of Lorengau.

Quakes past week

During the last week, two earthquakes, greater than magnitude 2.5, have been centered nearby. The stronger, a magnitude 6.3 tremor, was detected in the same region one day ago. The other, measuring 5.1, was felt near Kavieng on October 10.
