Seismic activity on July 22: Earthquake near Akhiok, AK reported – magnitude 5.1

KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH, AK — A preliminary 5.1 magnitude quake hit close to Akhiok on Wednesday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor jolted the area at 6:13 p.m. (8:13 a.m. local time). It occurred at a depth of 3 miles with the epicenter roughly 63 miles south-southeast of Akhiok.

Tremors last week

Over the last week, the region has experienced four quakes of magnitude 2.5 or above. The most significant was a 4.3 magnitude earthquake recorded in the same region on Jul. 17.
