Update: April 13 – 5.1 magnitude earthquake reported near Kokopo, Papua New Guinea

A 5.1 magnitude quake struck close to Kokopo on Monday around midday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The USGS reported a tremor in the region at 02:56 UTC (12:56 local time). The epicenter was approximately 173 km east-southeast of Kokopo, at a depth of 67 km. The magnitude was originally reported as 5.3 but later downgraded to 5.1.

Nearby area rattled by two tremors over the week

In the past week, two tremors above magnitude 2.5 have been centered nearby. Both were recorded in the same area with the stronger — a 4.8 magnitude earthquake — shaking on Apr. 6. The other, measuring 4.4, rattled on Apr. 12.
