Update: July 28 – 5.0 magnitude earthquake reported near Macquarie Island region

Monday morning, a 5.0 magnitude quake was registered close to Macquarie Island region, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

At 22:58 UTC (09:58 local time), the region was shaken by a tremor. The earthquake struck at a depth of 10 km, with its epicenter of Macquarie Island region. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.1 event, but later downgraded it to 5.0.

Last week, the area has experienced five quakes with a magnitude 6.1 or above. The strongest, a 7.0 magnitude quake, rocked the same region prior to this quake.
