NIUATOPUTAPU, Niuas — According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.3 magnitude quake occurred close to Hihifo Sunday morning.
The tremor, which jolted the area at 20:54 UTC (08:54 local time), was centered roughly 113 km northeast of Hihifo. It occurred at a depth of 10 km.

Two tremors closeby last week
Over the past week, two tremors exceeding magnitude 2.5 have been centered nearby. Both were recorded in the same region with the stronger — a 5.6 magnitude earthquake — shaking five days earlier. The other, measuring 5.0, occurred on February 12.
