Update: Earthquake measuring 5.5 shakes area near Cortes, Philippines on May 24

A 5.5 magnitude quake struck close to Cortes at midnight on Sunday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor jolted the region at 16:48 UTC (00:48 local time). It occurred at a depth of 34 km with the epicenter approximately 10 km east-northeast of Cortes. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.8 event, but later downgraded it to 5.5.
