Update: Earthquake rattles region near Severo-Kuril’sk, Russia on July 31 – 5.0 magnitude reported

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.0 magnitude quake jolted close to Severo-Kuril’sk at midday on Thursday.

At 00:06 UTC (11:06 local time), the area was struck by a tremor. The earthquake shook at a depth of 30 km, with its epicenter roughly 130 km east of Severo-Kuril’sk. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.1 event, but later downgraded it to 5.0.
