Earthquake measuring 5.1 hits area close to Severo-Kuril’sk, Russia on July 30

A 5.1 magnitude quake was registered near Severo-Kuril’sk Wednesday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

At 16:59 UTC (02:59 local time), the region was shaken by a tremor. The earthquake jolted at a depth of 35 km, with its epicenter approximately 112 km southeast of Severo-Kuril’sk.

Tremors past week

Last week, the area has experienced 19 earthquakes with a magnitude 2.5 or greater, four of them larger than magnitude 5.5. The strongest, a 6.0 magnitude quake, was recorded in the same region prior to this quake.
